Tottenham Hotspur will be a different team after the international break.
They have not begun the season in the best fashion. Mauricio Pochettino’s side beat Aston Villa 3-1 on the opening weekend and that’s the only victory they’ve recorded in 2019/20.
Two 2-2 draws with Manchester City and Arsenal came about more by luck than judgement, while they also fell to a dispiriting 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And yet, following the clash with the Gunners, Mauricio Pochettino suggested that the season begins now for Spurs.
He said, per Football.London: “The team wasn’t settled. I told you from day one when we started the pre-season in London and moved to Singapore, that is why I wasn’t happy, I was a little bit worried about the situation, because we knew very well what was going on.
“I am optimistic, happy, what is most important is to all be on the same page, with the club. That players have a clear idea where we want to arrive and how we want to move, clear minds like today Christian and different players, tomorrow they’re only going to be focused on Tottenham, not on thinking about different things that make management so difficult.
“But the most important thing is we knew what was going on when we finished the Champions League final, it’s about learning from our mistakes and of course from now it’s to decide on a strategy so we’re in a position that we should be.”
This is completely true.
Pochettino, all of a sudden, can have confidence in picking players over whom there was a question mark hanging. Christian Eriksen could well have left; now, he is staying. The same goes for Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier, along with Victor Wanyama. The entire quintet will be at the club until at least January.
There are no worries about jeopardising moves, now, about them potentially picking up injuries and seeing deals fall through.
In addition, players will have healed. Dele Alli wasn’t fit to start against Arsenal; Ryan Sessegnon has been on the sidelines; Eric Dier has yet to make a single appearance; Tanguy Ndombele has been out for two games.
There will be a freshness, one hopes, when Spurs reconvene ahead of their clash with Crystal Palace after the international break.

Plus, the new signings will have bedded in. Sure, Giovani Lo Celso and Sessegnon have not made their full debuts yet.
But they will be more up to speed with the methods instilled by Pochettino and the requirements they have to meet to be in the team on a regular basis.
When everyone is fit, Spurs suddenly have options.
Think purely about the midfield; Spurs have Ndombele, Lo Celso, Eriksen, Alli, Dier, Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko to pick from. Has there ever been such depth at the football club under Pochettino?
One has to think not.
Once the Premier League gets back underway, there will be no lingering uncertainty at Tottenham, just the question of how Pochettino can bring the best out of a stacked squad.
It is a query he is likely to relish finding the answer to.
