da wazamba: According to reports in the Daily Mail, Chelsea have launched a £25m offer for Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
What’s the word, then?
da marjack bet: Well, Blues boss Antonio Conte is keen to bring in more competition for Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses in the wing-back positions ahead of the upcoming season, and The Telegraph said on Tuesday that the Italian has become frustrated after missing out on Danilo and Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City, while a move for Juventus’ Alex Sandro looks to be almost dead.
Now the Daily Mail says that the Premier League holders have stepped up their interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain, who only has a year left on his Gunners contract and is yet to come close to signing a new one, and have offered Arsenal £25m for the versatile 23-year-old.
The report adds that their initial interest has been rebuffed by their London rivals, but they will intensify their efforts to bring the England international to Stamford Bridge as they know their neighbours may not be willing to risk losing the player for nothing in 2018.
How did Oxlade-Chamberlain do last season?
One of the 23-year-old’s main frustrations from his time with Arsenal will be his struggle to fulfil the potential he had when he joined from Southampton in 2011, as well as the fact that he is yet to nail down a regular position – something that was once again proved last term.
Even though the Three Lions star featured in 45 matches in all competitions – scoring six goals and providing a further 11 assists – he featured in eight different positions across the team in those outings.
While he was an impressive performer in both the left and right wing-back roles towards the end of the campaign – and against Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday – it may not have been enough to convince him that he has a long-term future at the Emirates.
Would he be a good signing for Chelsea?
He certainly would be.
Because he moved to Arsenal at such a young age, Oxlade-Chamberlain seems to have been around for years but he is still only 23 years of age and has the potential to still improve significantly.
Conte will certainly be aware that the midfielder would perfectly into his 3-4-3 system as he can cover both wing-back roles – he featured on the left-hand side against the Blues at Wembley last weekend – while he would also add to their home-grown options.
