Aston Villa advanced to the second round of the Carabao Cup as they beat Colchester United 2-1 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in difficult conditions on Wednesday night.
Villa boss Steve Bruce decided to make a number of changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Hull City in their opening Championship fixture of the season on Saturday on a wet night in Essex, and with Neil Taylor rested and Jordan Amavi on the verge of completing a move away, midfielder Birkir Bjarnason was deployed at left-back.
The Iceland international has struggled to hold a spot in the starting line-up since joining the Midlands outfit during the January transfer window because of injury and he probably won’t be playing at left-back again after this performance.
Aston Villa supporters were quick to have their say on the showing of the 29-year-old via social media, and they didn’t hold back despite the poor conditions and the fact he was playing out of position with some even saying that he “offers nothing”.
