da fezbet: AC Milan chairman Marco Fassone has told Sky Sports that the club have spoken to the agent of Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
What’s the word?
da betsul: It has been widely reported that the Spain international will leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
According to BBC Sport, at the end of last season manager Antonio Conte sent the striker a text message informing him that he is no longer wanted.
The arrival of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid suggests that it is a matter of time before Costa leaves the club.
In May, it was reported by The Telegraph that the striker has his heart set on a return to his former club Atletico Madrid, but they are banned from registering players until January 2018.
It seems that Milan are in the race for Costa’s signature following the chairman’s claims that talks have been held with the striker’s agent Jorge Mendes.
Fassone told Sky Sports:
“I would prefer to avoid talking about players from other teams. Diego Costa is a great player, but a Chelsea player. We went to see Jorge Mendes; there is a lot you can talk to him about. Costa is a great player but he is of Chelsea. That’s all.”
Is Atletico no longer an option?
Not necessarily. At the moment, media talk has gone quiet with regards to a possible return to Spain for Costa.
Even if a transfer was agreed, the 28-year-old will be unable to play in the first half of the season.
If Costa wants to be the first name on the teamsheet come January, then he needs regular games, and he cannot get that at Atletico.
Milan could be a good option for the striker as the Italian club have shown intent this summer by signing 10 new players, including defender Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus.
The Serie A club have struggled to maintain their elite status over the years, but they are fighting their way back, and an opportunity to be part of that could be appealing to Costa.
