Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has been hit with a fresh setback ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Sunderland.
The England international was on the verge of making a return to the first-team fold for Sunday’s showdown at Stamford Bridge after recovering from a groin injury sustained in the game with Stoke City on August 28.
But he picked up an adductor muscle problem in training and was officially ruled out of contention on Friday afternoon.
“Frank Lampard will be out of action for another two to three weeks having withdrawn from yesterday’s training session with a fresh muscle injury,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“The vice-captain was on course for a return in Sunday’s game, but Carlo Ancelotti announced today that the player suffered an injury to an abductor muscle near the end of the session.”
